Auction April 2026

Our Spring auction is a postal and room auction and will be held at the members meeting at Kenilworth on Saturday 25th April.

This is another bumper one with 760 lots including Forwarding Agents and other early postal history including a penny black on cover. Some rare Red Cross message items and a wide range of Occupation material, Liberation, Feldpost, good selections of postage due and instructional markings, post 1969 stamps and covers. The smaller islands are well represented especially Commodore items for Alderney and Sark together with a nice range of Herm, Lihou, Jethou and Brechou stamps and covers.

For the postcard collectors there are good ranges of Allix and LL cards, shipping, hotels as well as the more unusual ones.

There are some old prints of the islands, old maps and some interesting books on the Occupation as well as earlier history. We have one lot of old Guernsey coins and finally a lot being sold for charity donated by David Laurillard, our President, which is lot 760.

13	1794 Wrapper from Dundalk to Guernsey dated 8th January addressed to Thomas Sausmarez Guernsey via Southampton charged 1/4d being Dundalk to Dublin 4d, Dublin to London 6d, London to Southampton 4d and Agent's fee 2d making 1/4d with the Agent's endorsement on the back of the letter with the Bishop mark	£105.00
14	1795 EL/Wrapper from Guernsey to Nantes addressed to Monsieur P.F. Dobrée Consul Americain Nantes from Thomas Dobrée struck with the first Guernsey concave handstamp and rated 7d to London being 2d Packet fee and 5d inland Weymouth to London. The reverse bears a London Chief Office stamp for 17th August 1795. One of only two letters known for this London Agent Battier Zornlen in private hands (2022). Most unusually inside this wrapper the text is dated 13th Sept 1795 which indicates the stamp on the reverse has the wrong date, but this is unlikely as few such mistakes are found. More likely the text inside is a draft of another which is a practice sometimes found! Whilst possible it suggests the wrapper had another enclosure and should have been charged as a double. The cover is endorsed by Battier Zornlen below the addressee on the front – v.rare	£650.00
15	1796 EL from Guernsey to London dated 13th May 1796 addressed to Thomas De Saumarez Esq., King's Procureur to the care of Paul Le Mersurier rated 1/2d being 2d Guernsey to Weymouth packet fee and 5d Weymouth to London and then charged double. Has crown handstamp and light concave GUERNSEY on front at top and London datestamp MA/18/96 on back – clean EL and over 1oz.	£220.00
16	1796 EL from London to Jersey with London datestamp on reverse and rated 7d being London to Weymouth 5d plus the Weymouth to Jersey Packet Rate 2d addressed chez mm. J. & C. Hemery/neg.ts (negociants – merchants) – three letters are recorded between 1796 and 1810 – very scarce as Jersey LF/Agents.	£300.00

29	1809 EL from Guernsey to Seringapatam, India dated 12th June carried privately to Weymouth then entered the post, charged 9d Weymouth to London with strike in black of the WEYMOUTH/131 town mileage mark and then forwarded by Messrs Brock & Le Messurier to India. The EL is addressed to Capt De Havilland/Honble Comp, Corps of Engineers, Seringapatam, India and endorsed on face 'Care of Messrs Brock & Le Mesurier- London'. Verso London receiving cds in red JUN 14/1809, marked Post Paid(?) in black ink and endorsed in manuscript 'forwarded your Most Obedient humble servant Chinnoo/ GRO' and above manuscript 'from Europe' – A very complex EL!.	£95.00
30	1809 Wrapper from Parsonstown to Guernsey dated 24th February charged 2/- being 6d Parsonstown to Dublin, 2d Dublin to Holyhead, (11d) Holyhead to London (endorsed 1/7d), then 1/1d Holyhead to Weymouth (re-calculated) 1/9d (endorsed) plus Agent's fee of 1d (N. Robilliard) and 2d 'Bye Boat' fee to Guernsey thus totalling 2/-. The wrapper bears a black straight line mileage PARSONSTOWN mark and some other indistinct red marks on the reverse side and a copy of the original letter enclosed from the Priaulx archive in Guernsey	£210.00

36	1828 EL from Madras to Guernsey dated 9th January, 1828 landed at Portsmouth (boxed INDIA LETTER/PORTSMOUTH in red ink) then routed via Weymouth direct indicated by only one London backstamp and charged as an India letter, the rate then was 4d up to 3oz so total of 2/4d via London and Weymouth to Guernsey. The letter was opened in Guernsey, some contents possibly removed, as on its return to London it was charged only 1/1d for a single letter. The back has an oval Madras GPO datestamp, a GUERNSEY scroll and a faint red London arrival cds. A complex, interesting entire letter forwarded by John Thomas in London	£195.00

38	1831 EL sent 25th January, 1831 from Rio de Janiero via Jersey to St. Malo carried privately from Rio de Janiero and landed at Jersey where it was put in the post by Jersey Agents Amiraux Le Breton to St Malo arriving 14 April 1831 evidenced by French cds. Rated 6d in manuscript and on arrival at the French PO in St Malo was charged 6 decimes evidenced by the 6 and also struck with the two line GRANDE BRETAGNE / PAR ST. MALO smudged handstamp. 41	1833 Wrapper from Rio de Janiero dated 5th July to Guernsey carried privately, landed at Jersey, endorsed and forwarded privately to Guernsey on 12th September 1833 – 'Forwarded by your Obedient Servants T. & P. Duhamel / Jersey 12th September / 1833' on back of the wrapper. One of four letters recorded, includes scanned copy of original letter from Priaulx Library files, scarce	£225.00
42	1835 Wrapper carried privately from Havana endorsed 'via Guernsey' where it was landed, then endorsed verso 'forwarded by your Obedient Servant. Aaron S. Symes'. It was then placed in the post evidenced by the GUERNSEY dated arc SE 7 1835 where it was charged 1/1d being 3d Packet fee and 10d inland rate Southampton to London where it arrived evidenced by the red London transit cds also on the back, only two such letters recorded	£210.00

Has a stepped SOUTHAMPTON / SHIP LETTER in black ink verso with a red London cds of 21AU 21/1837, addressed to Colonel De Havilland / Messrs John Thomas, Son & Lefevre 21, Austin Friars London. 45	1837 Wrapper from Havana to London addressed to N.M.Rothschild Sons (27 May) carried privately and landed at Guernsey and entered into the post by Guernsey Agent, Edward Le Pelley, charged 2/2d as a double letter being Guernsey to Weymouth Packet fee 3d and Weymouth to London 10d, then doubled to 2/2d and endorsed by Le Pelley verso 'Received July 14 and forwarded by Your Obedient Servant Edward Le Pelley beside Guernsey and London datestamps. 46	1838 Wrapper from Brixham to Guernsey charged 1/- being 9d Brixham to Weymouth plus 3d for the Packet fee from Weymouth to Guernsey. Endorsed verso by John U. 53	1894 printed illustrated envelope commemorating the Jubilee of Uniform Penny Postage unusually used within Guernsey in July 1894. The printed one penny stamp on the envelope has been cancelled with the Guernsey 'squared' circle or combined obliterator datestamp on JY 2 94	£45.00
54	1897 printed illustrated advertising envelope used by Gardner's Royal Hotel in Guernsey posted to Philadelphia, USA in August 1897. The QV 2½d stamp has been cancelled on August 13th with the Guernsey 'squared' circle date stamp and the attractive envelope redirected within the USA and very roughly opened. David has designed the covers for 90 different forms of transport in which he has travelled. Some of which were when he was in Guernsey for the CISS 75th Anniversay meeting in 2025. These are a the Blue Islands turbo prop plane, a Guernsey Bus, The Guernsey Land Train, the Trident Herm Ferry (2, one with a Herm large cds handstamp) all with different concellations.
